Overview

Housed in a 19th century former print shop, this upscale, Michelin-starred West Loop favorite features acclaimed chef Andrew Zimmerman’s seasonal and inventive American cooking (and housemade pastas, chutney, and jam). The setting, evocative of classic Chicago, is vintage glam and warm.

“Though the décor may travel through time, Chef Andrew Zimmerman's cuisine is firmly grounded in the 21st century. Whether your visit is for lunch or dinner, Sepia always offers a seriously impressive meal. Celery soup may be a commonplace offering, but this version is far from banal. The silky purée is enticingly arranged with tiny cubes of compressed apple, chopped toasted hazelnuts, and paper-thin ciabatta croutons. Entrées have a solid American footing but enjoy some playful tweaking, as in crispy cornmeal-crusted trout served over a salad of black-eye peas with bits of pecans and candied bacon. The dessert station turns out equally impressive work, including a block of chocolate sponge cake. Moist, dark as ebony, and plated with a scoop of coconut-vanilla sorbet and dried fig compote, it is both delightful and (surprise!) completely vegan.” – Michelin

“Zimmerman's charcuterie plate is a revelation, including some firm copa di testa but also a fat-ringed game-bird pate and rabbit rillettes, alongside a stack of toasted baguette slices. And rich black pudding, paired with sauteed sea scallops over celery-root puree, is as novel a surf-and-turf combo as I've encountered in some time… I'd go back for Zimmerman's short ribs, braised in Belgian ale for an uncommon depth of flavor, placed alongside spaetzle flavored with spice-bread seasonings (cinnamon and nutmeg among them) and some sweet red cabbage. Ambience

The vintage glam setting includes art nouveau tiled flooring, red damask banquettes, antique mirrored panels, and dramatic smoky-shaded chandeliers. More modern elements, like the wood trimmed, floor-to-ceiling wine racks featured along the exposed brick wall, seamlessly add to the easy elegance of the space.
