Modern American

  • 93

A River North standout for over 15 years, this eatery from Chef/Owner Michael Kornick features chef Erick Williams’ farm-to-plate modern American fare in à la carte and tasting menu formats. The setting, a sky-lit brick-walled former warehouse, is spacious, elegant, and warm.

What the Food Critics are Saying

“Twin disks of rabbit terrine rest on crunchy fried green tomatoes, strewn with purple mustard greens and dots of yellow-tomato jam. Slices of Colorado lamb are draped over black quinoa alongside dollops of green-garlic flan, picking up salty notes from house-made lamb bacon. Veal tenderloin with spaetzle and spring veggies is excellent, but the reduced jus with notes of mint and cumin makes it extraordinary; an indulgent marrow butter enriches morel mushrooms with fettuccine.,,In addition to the a la carte menu, there's a daily tasting menu that really shows [Chef] Williams at his best, exemplified by such dishes as a gorgeous asparagus cannelloni with clams, whitefish roe and fava beans; pan-seared cobia on a bed of lentils and fiddlehead ferns with tiny pieces of boar bacon.” – Chicago Tribune

“Michael Kornick’s initials still emblazon the exterior of this River North stalwart, but chef Erick Williams executes the day-to-day, drawing in newbies and satisfying loyalists with elegant and seasonal contemporary American cuisine. The spacious and tasteful room (think rich architect’s home) is comfortable enough that you can settle in for Williams’s tasting menu, where he’s been known to show off a veal porterhouse grilled over hardwood charcoal with melted leeks and the simplicity of seasonal oysters with a mignonette.” – Time Out

From the Chef

"There's a reason our restaurant leads with lower-case letters; restaurants should be understated in some degree. We're a vehicle for other great things to happen — a great conversation, a first date or, hopefully, an anniversary.” – Executive Chef Erick Williams

The sky-lit, 2-story space is elegant and warm, with brick walls, vaulted ceilings, fine linens, and taupe banquettes. Seating options include both the mezzanine level and quieter balcony. A 40-seat (newly remodeled) bar/lounge area offers cocktails and bar bites. And the second floor private dining room—with its unbroken view of the Michigan Avenue skyline—was recently named (by Crain’s Chicago Business) one of Chicago’s best.
