Overview

Black Cat is a destination for timeless cocktails, Modern American supper club cuisine and nightly live music and entertainment, in the heart of San Francisco’s Tenderloin. Chef Ryan Cantwell’s menu focuses on shareable plates, including sesame-fried oysters dotted with horseradish remoulade, rabbit potpie or latkes topped with charred shallot cream and salmon pastrami. Bar manager Gabriel Lowe pours well-balanced, classic cocktails like the Vieux Carre or Sidecar, while the wine list, curated by Wine Director Eugenio Jardim, focuses on Californian and European labels with a robust collection of grower-producer Champagne. Black Cat is known for its grit-meets-glam aesthetic dissonance, from lush antique velvet and jewel tones to exposed brick walls.

Cocktail History 101

  • Blackthorn, Barfly 1927 (Savoy 1930) This Irish Whiskey Manhattan acquired its name from the tree. Often made with sweet vermouth though the original recipe calls for "French", meaning dry. We hope you think this "perfect" version is perfect
  • Martinez 1884 First printed in The Modern Bartender. There is uncertainty over the origin of this beloved precursor to the classic martini. What we do know is that it is from California and was created during the gold rush. The original recipe calls for curaçao, not maraschino
  • Widows Kiss 1895 Benedictine was first made in the 1500's, making it the oldest liqueur still in production. Yellow Chartreuse dates back to 1838
  • Vieux Carre 1938 Walter Bergeron, Monteleone Hotel This New Orleans born cocktail is named after the city's French Quarter (Old Square). Made of cognac, benedictine, and rye whiskey, this cocktail is a microcosm of the city's culture
  • Queens Park Swizzle 1920s A classic from the Queens Park Hotel in Trinidad. "The most delightful form of anesthesia given out today" according to Trader Vic in 1946. Something of a mojito but inarguably classier. Sip these distinctly Caribbean flavors, close your eyes and picture your beach
  • Leave-It-To-Me, Barflies and Cocktail 1927 (Savoy 1930) Savoy calls the apricot version number 1, and the raspberry version number 2. The recipe was printed in Barflies and Cocktails with raspberry three years before Savoy was printed. A great example of how cocktail history can become unclear over the years
  • Bee's Knees, 1910s-1920s This delicious drink popped up sometime during prohibition. When and where exactly, no one knows. It is fair to assume the honey was used to cover the foul taste of bathtub gin. We hope you find our version more gin focused and remember with each sip how lucky we are prohibition is no longer
  • Invisible Gin 1951 Gentleman's Companion, Charles H. Baker Originally a gin buck with pineapple, we add amaro nonino in this rendition
  • Midori Sour 1970s Midori was first introduced in 1979 at Studio 54. Disco may be dead, but this delicious melon liqueur lives on
  • Greenpoint Manhattan 2011 Michael Mcllroy, Milk & Honey NY The youngest cocktail in our classics section. This Brooklyn variation of the Manhattan is deserving of its popularity
  • Sazerac 1838 Nearly two centuries old. Originally made with cognac and currently made with rye, we hope ours is a perfect mix of the two
  • Martini, Early 1900s Derived from the 'Martinez". Like your whistle, this drink is best when wet. Vermouth is our friend. Keep it refrigerated when open. Drink it on it's own if you're taking a break from gin
  • Cosmo 1934 This cocktail can be first found printed in Pioneers of Mixing at Elite Bars (1934) using raspberry and gin instead of cranberry and vodka. A few decades later, Ocean Spray printed a 'Harpoon' recipe calling for equal parts vodka and, you guessed it, cranberry, making this drink far sweeter and juicier than it's original version. Here we add just a dash of clear creek cranberry liqueur to impart the proper tart flavor and color
  • Sidecar 1946, David Embury Another classic, brandy-based New Orleans original. Call it a brandy margarita if you want. We call it delicious
  • Paloma 1860s Some attribute this cocktail recipe to Don Javier Delgado Corona, barman at La Capilla bar. It is possible it was named after the 1860s song "The Dove", though the origin of this cocktail is not concrete. It's simplest version consists of blanco tequila, lime, and grapefruit soda
  • French 75, 1915 Named after a quick-firing field gun used by the French in WWI, possibly due to its ease of consumption. Commonly made with gin but traditionally made with cognac
  • Daiquiri 1920s (Though That Is Arguable) No blender necessary. This often bastardized classic is traditionally three simple, delicious ingredients: rum, lime, sugar. Some attribute its origins to the British Navy. In 1740, in attempts to have less drunk sailors, Admiral Vernon ordered the Navy's rum ration be diluted with lime and water
