What the Food Critics are Saying

“It doesn't take long to realize that this place is special - stacks of various Heath pottery pieces fill the shelves behind the bar; chunks of fish glisten like jewels in the case in front. Behind the counter, you can also see such modern equipment as a sous-vide circulator and blowtorches for giving a final sear to some fish dishes.”

[Selected descriptions from the omakase menu]: “The madai - sea bream - topped with a dab of shisho and jalapeño emulsion was an example of minimum number of ingredients achieving a maximum effect. At first, all we tasted was the delicate complexity of the fish, but then chile danced across the palate, leaving a clean, briny aftertaste."

"The most unusual dish was nori wrapped with house-cured salmon roe with frozen monkfish liver shaved over the top. The fish eggs popped and the cold liver warmed and melted to create a tsunami in the mouth.” – San Francisco Chronicle

Ambience

From the outside it is easy to miss Akiko’s (there is no sign over the door). Inside, the setting is intimate (30 seats) and inviting, with exposed brick walls and an earth tone palette adding warm, urban touches to the space. Diners can choose between the sushi bar and table seating in the adjoining room.

On the Side

“Akiko” means “autumn child,” “iris,” and “bright and light” in Japanese.
